I went through all my working FD lenses, plus a some I borrowed, and tested them for resolution. I also looked at contrast, color saturation, astigmatism, coma, vignetting (light falloff) and color fringing, although these are harder for me to quantify, and are thus somewhat subjective. Distortion was not measured, as it requires specialized equipmentand a rigorous attention to detail.
My setup consists of a 36" x 48" (0.9m x 1.2m) white dry-erase board with resolution test targets attached in various places on it, along with a Kodak color separation guide test target and graded gray scale strip. I shoot at a magnification of 1:35 to 1:39. There are many logistic problems with performing these tests; the camera must be perfectly parallel and coplanar to the board, and centered on it, the tripod and test target must be on solid ground, focus is critical, exposure must be reasonably close (within a stop and a half), there must not be any heat waves or other turbulence in the air, 1:37 with an 800mm lens means the target is about 100 feet (30m) distant, etc. Needless to say, I had to re-do some of the tests to get decent results, and some probably still could be improved upon!
I examined the prints for color, contrast, fringing, and vignetting (light falloff). For the negatives, I used a 40-200 power microscope to determine resolution, astigmatism, coma, and help with fringing. I learned that the limits of resolution on the prints were anywhere from about 70 to 100 lines per mm. In my first FD super-telephoto lens review, I read the resolutions from the print, so some of the figures I reported then were artificially low. I suspect there may still be more resolution in some of the lenses, especially the longer ones, due to residual tripod vibration and thermal air currents. These outside influences can make the lens seem worse than it actually is, but they can't make a bad lens appear better. In any event, if I can read a certain resolution, the lens is capable of AT LEAST that much, and perhaps more.
For film, I used Royal 100 (RA) and PRN (Pro-100). Either of these are very capable for measuring resolution to around 180 to 200 lines per mm based on my examination of the negatives. I also tested a roll of the new, T-Grain Royal 400 (RC), and found I could measure resolution with it down to about 140 lines per mm, and maybe finer. Impressive film!
I have placed notes on contrast, color saturation, coma, etc. below the resolution measurement tables, and hope they are not too cryptic. I tried to include data with as little clutter as possible, and without reproducing an entire chart of every little detail. Where I have not listed any information on a measurement (like astigmatism, for instance), that means that I could not detect any real amount of this defect in that lens. For example, on the 35mm f/2.0 I list:
Cont/Col, 3+/4, v sl coma, vign @ 2.0
This means that contrast is slightly above average (3+), color saturation is above average (4), and there is a very slight amount of coma and vignetting at f/2.0. Astigmatism was not detectable.
