I am not trying to say D200 is bad or 5D is good.
I have used Nikon DX format extensively over 4 years (D100, D70 and D200 etc.) and recently decided to switch to Canon. My findings are:
1. Landscape – Advantage Canon – Nikkon has excellent 12-24 Nikkor. On 5D, I have to stop down more than f11 (f13?) @ 17mm (17-40 F4L) to get equal corner sharpness of 12-24 Nikkor at f8@12mm. However, D200 is so soft that Landscape photos of 5D with excellent details are superior IMO.
2. Portrait, Products and creative photography - Avantage Canon - with excellent DOF control not able to do with DX format.
3. Sports – Advantage D200 if you compare with 5D. with 1.5 crop factor, You get extra 00mph with your 70-200 2.8 VR. But then again, you can use longer and slower lens on 5D and up ISO. 5fps on D200 cannot be beat though. If you compare with 30D, I think they are a wash. D200 resolution IMHO is not upto 10Mpixl.
4. Photojournalism and events (weddings included) - Avantage Canon - with it's excellent 24-105 and IS + high ISO capabilities. Don't mind vignetting on Photojournalism and events where getting the shot is more important (corner sharpness is good and acceptable with 24-105 although Nikkor 17-55 is excellent). For weddings, you can stop down to avoid vignettings.
5. Flash photography – Advantage Nikon. Nikon is excellent but Canon is no slouch either. D200 + SB800 is great as well as 5D + 580EX (if you dial in +2/3 FEC).
6. Macro Photography - Avantage Nikon (??) . Even better with recently announced 105 2.8 Macro VR! Nikon is the MACRO KING.

( Вот тут я с автором не согласен.. он не учел наличие remarkable MPE-65 макро-линзы и Макро-Флашек :) )
--------------------
7. Low light - Avantage Canon. Nikon cannot match 5D ISO 3200 + 50 1.4 @ F1.4 and I can still print 30" x 20" after Noise Ninja.
8. Ergo and build - close call imho. Although I like d70 and d200 (cluttered with buttons and knobs), I get used to 5D quite fast (very neat layout). Only one thing - I cannot reprogram rear wheel and front dial to control aparture / shutter speed (just like I can on Nikon). Other than that + mirror lock up and bracketing button, no issues. I really prefer buttons for ISO and WB on 5D better. With D200 you need to use 2 hands. With 5D only one hand. Your index finger press the button, your thumb change the setting via the wheel.
9. Software - Advantage Nikon. Nikon Capture is fantastic with more functions (it should be as it is not free). DPP is still lacking although it give best coversion for Canon Raw.
10. System – Advantage Canon. With 1.6 crop and FF offering, you can have the best of both worlds. I am thinking to buy 30D as back up and for tele advantage. Also, in terms of lenses, I prefer Canon lens line up better with IS and USM becoming standard on all new lenses. There is no comparable lens like 17-55 IS or 24-105IS in Nikon.
11. Future Proof – Advantage Canon. With DX size, Nikon cannot increase pixels any more without serious compromises to NOISE and DIFFRACTION. Canon can still cram more pixels into their FF camera until pixel pitch is similar to 30D. It will be about 22 Mpixl. Unless there are breakthroughs in current technology, I feel safer with Canon.
12. IQ – Advantage Canon. IQ wise, Nikon ISO 100 is very similar to Canon ISO 100. From ISO 400 and beyond, Canon is better (by one and a half stop! IMHO). The most important thing I like about Canon is that the image is so clean and smooth it can tolerate interpolation to very large sizes whereas D200 images cannot be blown up so large even for ISO800 shots. When you do USM on D200 images, the images are easier to get noisy and show a lot of artifacts compare to Canon especially when you interpolate.
For me, my style of shooting involves portraits, products, creative photography and photojournalism, events, family events + holidays and Canon suits me fine.
All the advantages of Canon mentioned above (especially Image Quality and System) are the reasons for me to switch.
Another IMHO, D200 should not be compared to 5D. It is better to compare to 30D. 5D is in different league.

Только тогда последнее из преимушществ Д200 ( 5к/сек) теряется ... остается только корпус, полу-пылевлагозащита и функционал... тоже не мало... если кому важно :)
