Д3400:
The D3400 offers some very punchy, yet pleasing JPEGs right out of the box. The colors in the D3400's JPEGs are more saturated than those produced by Canon's T6. In terms of color hue there are a few notable differences;
the yellows in particular appear less orange than those seen in the T6 while the reds seem a little more orangey by comparison.
Д500:
The D500's JPEG engine yields pleasing colors, particularly the warm greens and very yellow yellows typical of Nikon imagery. Reds aren't quite as deep as Canon's rendering though. The D500's default white balance setting is 'Auto0: Keep white (reduce warm colors)', which does not preserve warmth under tungsten light. We think this leads to unnatural looking photos in warm, dim light, but you can easily force the camera to retain warmth (our preference) by selecting the 'Auto2: Keep warm lighting colors' WB option.
Д5:
Colors are a strong point though, and generally appear punchier than the D5's predecessor
. In fact, the D5 has some of the nicest yellows we've ever seen: Sony's yellows look positively green in comparison, and just more yellow than the 1D-X II.
Nikon still renders some of the nicest greens we've seen, particularly due to their warmth. Canon still has the upper hand when it comes to reds though. Importantly, color saturation is retained at high ISOs - more so than with the D4S, and certainly more so than the Sony. By default, the D5 neutralizes warm tones under tungsten light, leading to somewhat unnatural results in low light, but you change this behavior by setting White Balance to 'Auto2: Keep warm lighting colors'.
Д810:
JPEG colors continue to be pleasing, with warm yellows and greens that lend to great landscape and low light imagery. Compare this to the greenish yellows and bluish greens the Canon, and to a worse degree Sony, demonstrate. Canon arguably takes the lead in reds and skintones though, with skin having a magenta cast on the Nikon.
