Gholhak Garden under British Imperialism

In 2006, 162 members of the Iranian parliament wrote a letter to the speaker of Majlis, Gholam Ali Haddad-Adel, demanding an investigation over the ownership of Gholhak garden. According to existing documents, Gholhak Garden was given to British diplomats for "residence" and the ownership of the Garden has not been granted to the UK embassy in Iran. In reaction to this letter, the British embassy in Tehran made no comment. In another occasion, British officials threatened to seize Iran's Manchester Garden, if the Iranians persue the case of Gholhak Garden. Manchester Garden was purchased by Iranians and belongs to Iran. In contrary UK has never purchased Gholhak Garden. British government has a long history of interference in Iran. During the Qajar and early Pahlavi era, UK had control over Iran's oil rich areas through the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, today known as British Petroleum (BP). Prime minister Mossadegh who was a nationalist and passionately opposed foreign intervention in Iran, succeeded to win the case in international court and nationalized Iran's oil. In 2007 an Iranian parliamentary group investigated the related documents and concluded that the British ownership documents were invalid.[5] In 1934, the UK registered the garden as its possession in Iran. The registration is apparently considered illegal, according to Iranian law at the time. A group of Iranian law experts are voluntarily reviewing the documents related to the Garden. "These law experts are willing to follow up this file in internal and international courts, so to return the nation's right to its righteous place. In the Gholhak Garden file no bargains are to be made, and if officials want to bargain, they must know that we are only ready to deal Tehran's Gholhak Garden with London's Hyde Park." said an Iranian official.
